Larry Kagan

My work with shadows began as an attempt to draw with steel, some twenty odd years ago, when the cast shadows got in the way of my photographing the wall-mounted steel. After trying and failing to get rid of those pesky shadows I thought that I might be able to incorporate them into the work. It turns out that when you can get viewers to actually look consciously at cast shadows, the shadows elicit a real visceral reaction, and thus they make for a great expressive medium. While shadows are largely considered as secondary byproducts of the blocking of light, and as such unworthy of much conscious attention, they actually constitute a rich cognitive vein that serves as a foundation for seeing.
