Gary Lang
Gary Lang (b. 1950, Los Angeles, CA) is a Southern California–based painter, sculptor, muralist, and lecturer whose work spans multiple decades and disciplines. His practice encompasses several enduring series, including Concentric Circles and Squares, Zipper Paintings, Stars, Word Paintings, and sculptural works composed of ritualistically
assembled objects.
Known especially for his concentric line paintings, Lang creates vibrant, pulsating compositions—particularly in his tondo works—that are made entirely freehand, balancing spontaneity with control. Through his meditative process, he channels clarity and joy, drawing deeply from the immediacy of the present moment.
Lang has exhibited internationally, with over seventy solo exhibitions across the United States, Austria, France, Japan, the Netherlands, and Spain. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and earned his BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1970, followed by an MFA from Yale University in 1975.
A recipient of a Fulbright/Hayes Travel Grant, he lived in Barcelona during the 1970s before relocating to New York, Los Angeles, and ultimately Ojai, California. His public artworks include murals in La Jolla, CA, and a large-scale outdoor sculpture in New Haven, CT. Lang has also lectured at institutions such as UCLA, the Claremont Colleges, and Yale University.
